Nota biográficaJoan Blaeu (1596 Alkmaar–1673 Ámsterdam) fue un destacado cartógrafo holandés y miembro del consejo de Ámsterdam. Hijo de Willem Blaeu, también un famoso cartógrafo, Joan y su hermano Cornelius se hicieron cargo del taller de su padre en 1638. Se convirtió en el cartógrafo oficial de la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Orientales y alcanzaría mayor fama con una colección de mapas de ciudades holandesas titulada Tooneel der Steeden, el primer atlas de Escocia, y la obra maestra Atlas Maior.
